Above: Mississippi State University President Mark Keenum and his wife, Rhonda Keenum, congratulate Allyson McLeod, from L.C. Hatcher Elementary School in George County, on winning fourth place for the Art and Literacy Award for her drawing for the Maroon Edition Youth Project. The Keenums welcomed elementary students from around the state who participated in an art competition that was a part of the Maroon Edition First-Year Reading Experience program. The students were asked to draw pictures of what Eudora Welty’s “The Shoe Bird” meant to them. The art worked was judged by retired Starkville art teacher Jane Gair. The students received a certificate, a copy of “The Shoe Bird” and a MSU cowbell for participating in the competition. Right: Lillie Hyde, of L.C.
