Injured officer catches suspect despite injuries

A Starkville Police officer is recovering after sustaining injuries while apprehending a burglary suspect Thursday.
Willie James Young, 48, of 903 Lousiville St. Lot 3, was charged with burglary of an occupied building, resisting arrest and aggravated assault of a police officer.
Officers responded to a call of a burglary in progress at approximately 1:30 p.m. When officers arrived on the scene, they spotted Young carrying a laptop computer. SPD Officer Christopher Kenard was the first to apprehend the suspect and was suffered a broken arm during the process.
Starkville Police Department Chief David Lindley said Young resisted arrest, and when Kenard attempted to subdue him the two fell to the ground during the struggle, causing the officer’s arm to break.
Despite Kenard’s injury, he was able to apprehend the suspect until additional officers arrived to assist him.
The laptop was recovered and was identified as belonging to the victim who initially placed the call.
Young was recently indicted by the Oktibbeha County Grand Jury for three separate counts of auto burglary and was released on a $15,000 bond at the time of his arrest.
He is currently being held at Clay County Jail. No bond was set as of press time.
Kenard underwent surgery after the incident and is being treated at OCH Regional Medical Center for his injuries.
