The 18th-ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs wrap up their three-game homestand today as they host the Bulldogs of Georgia in a 12:24 p.m. affair in the friendly confines of the Humphrey Coliseum.
Mississippi State (19-5, 6-3) has won four of their last five meetings against Georgia (11-12, 2-7) with UGA having not won in Starkville since 2002.
State remains undefeated in conference play at home (5-0) and is currently riding a 13-game home winning streak, the second longest in the coliseum’s history.
Despite the momentum MSU carries into the contest, head coach Rick Stansbury understands his team can’t afford to look past Georgia.
“Georgia is coming off its most impressive victory of the season,” said Stansbury. “What they did to a very good Arkansas team catches your attention.”
Georgia, who dismantled Arkansas on Wednesday 81-59 to snap a four-game skid, is led in scoring by freshman Kentavious Caldwell-Pope who is scoring an average of 14.2 points per outing. Gerald Robinson, a senior guard for UGA, is adding 14.1 points per contest.
Mississippi State is coming off a big win as well as they defeated Ole Miss on Thursday evening 70-60 during a night when State put together a true team effort to pick up the win.
In that outing senior guard, Dee Bost, earned his first double-double of the season with 15 points and a season-high 13 assists. Junior forward Arnett Moultrie was a rebound shy of his 14th double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds.
A win for Mississippi State would keep it in running for overall SEC title with the league-leading Kentucky Wildcats coming to Starkville in 10 days.
Next MSU travels to Baton Rouge, for a Valentine’s Day battle against LSU. Tip is set for 8 p.m. and will be televised on ESPNU followed by a trip to Auburn to take on the Tigers a week from today.
As part of the season long celebration for MSU's 100 years of basketball, the All-Century Starting 5 members of Erick Dampier, Bailey Howell, Jeff Malone, Jarvis Varnado, and Darryl Wilson wlll be recognized at halftime during today's Georgia game.
