Today Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin is expected to announce Vic Schaefer as the next head basketball coach of women’s basketball.
Schaefer comes to MSU from Texas A&M where he has been a longtime assistant to head coach Gary Blair who guided the Aggies to a national title last season.
Schaefer has served as Blair’s assistant for the past 15 seasons with a stop at Arkansas as well as College Station.
Throughout his coaching career, Schaefer, has been known for his defensive scheme and strategy, dating back to his days as the head coach at Sam Houston State from 1990-1997.
Schaefer is replacing Sharon Fanning-Otis, the school’s all-time winingest coach with 281 wins, who announced her intent to retire on February 20.
The No. 22 Aggies are in the NCAA Tournament field receiving an at-large bid as the three-seed in the Raleigh Regional.
Mississippi State has a press conference set for 11 a.m. at the Bryan Building on the MSU campus.
