Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen repeatedly says he looks for playmakers to make plays.
Well, there’s no time better than today for Mullen to see just exactly what he’s looking for as the Bulldogs enter their second scrimmage of the spring.
State fans are welcome to make their way to the practice fields for MSU’s 11 a.m. scrimmage to watch Tyler Russell and Dak Prescott lead the MSU offense against the dynamic defense lead by Josh Boyd and Johnthan Banks.
So far this spring Mullen has been pleased with his offensive production and if last Saturday’s scrimmage is any indication of what fans can expect to see this morning, they are in for a treat.
Russell has taken the leadership role in stride and while he leads the way, Prescott is there to make sure Russell gives it everything he’s got.
“I don’t think (Russell) is going to settle or be complacent,” Prescott said. “I’m going to push him to make sure he doesn’t.”
The redshirt freshman quarterback has looked good during his second spring with Mississippi State and he’s looking for to his opportunity.
Even though it was determined later on Thursday that the Bulldogs will hold their scrimmage on the practice fields instead of Davis Wade Stadium, Prescott looks forward to his next opportunity on the Scott Field surface.
“I’m ready to play in the stadium again,” he said. “I’ve got one under my belt, but you know it is a different mindset you have to have when you got into the stadium. I’m ready to do it and let this offense lead the team.”
With each practice, Prescott sees his teammates getting better, learning their role and executing that role.
“This is the spring so everyone has got to get their looks,” said Prescott. “We’ve just got to find the guys that can help us there in the fall, that’s just part of spring ball.
“I know a lot more than I did last year apparently. All of our receivers are great, from the freshmen to the seniors, they know what they are doing.”
The Bulldogs wrap up for Easter Break with their Good Friday scrimmage held behind the Shira Athletic Complex.
