Mississippi State’s Rick Ray picked up his first signee as head coach of the Bulldogs when Wednesday morning Jacoby Davis pledged his services to the Bulldogs.
Davis comes to MSU from St. John’s Military Academy in Wisconsin where he spent the 2012 season averaging 21 points and five assists per game.
“The guys are just like good guys,” said Davis after his visit to Starkville earlier this week. “The staff truly cares about getting better each and every day. I really enjoyed my visit to Mississippi State, and I'm excited to be a part of the Bulldog family."
The 6-foot-1, 185-pound guard played his senior season at West Charlotte High School in North Carolina on a team that finished 28-2 for the season. He averaged 17 points and 5.3 assists for the season in route to the state title.
”I'm really excited about Jacoby joining the Bulldog family," Ray said. "He's exactly the type of quality person we are looking for in this basketball program. I think he'll be a great addition to our team because he's a winner, and he cares about the team. Jacoby will be a valuable asset to our team because he is a true point guard that can set up his teammates, but he's also a good shooter and will take pressure off of his teammates with his ability to knock down shots."
Ray hasn’t backed away from saying his teams will work hard and push the tempo. According to St. John’s head coach Brian Richert, Davis will fit right in.
"What Coach Ray is going to love about Jacoby is his ability to fly on the court,” said Richert. “He can get from one end to the other in a flash and it's amazing how things become a break in a matter of seconds with him."
Davis was an all-around athlete in high school as he led his Lion team on the gridiron as the quarterback.
Ray and the rest of the Bulldog staff remain on the recruiting trail in search of the right players to help rebuild Mississippi State basketball.
The Bulldogs could also add Andre Applewhite from Central High School in Memphis, Tenn. The talented guard has a press conference set for 1 p.m. to announce his decision.
