A benefit to raise funds for local resident Bree Anne Wilcutt will be held May 4 at First Presbyterian Church of Starkville. Wilcutt, 20, was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
The First Presbyterian Childcare Board of Directors worked in conjunction with members of the Starkville Modern Woodmen of America chapter to set up the barbecue fundraiser. Wilcutt has worked as an after-school teacher for the First Presbyterian Church Childcare Center for two years.
Modern Woodmen financial representative Barbara Coats said the organization will match up to $2,500 of money raised to give to the Wilcutt family to aid with medical expenses.
Tickets to the fundraiser are $7 per person. Coats said she wanted to get the word out about the tickets ahead of time so the event organizers know how much food to prepare.
“I think there will be a good turnout for it,” Coats said. “I think (Wilcutt) exudes exactly the mission of Modern Woodmen ... with her work in the Childcare Center.
“Modern Woodmen’s mission is to better the lives of our communities. Especially with Bree and both of her parents working in professions that do that very thing, I think this is a perfect match for Modern Woodmen to give back to the Wilcutt family.”
First Presbyterian Childcare Center Director Jennifer Kouns said Wilcutt will turn 21 years old next week and will be having her second chemotherapy on her birthday.
“I’ve known her since she graduated from high school and started working here,” Kouns said. “She’s an elementary education major and a good kid.”
Tickets for the fundraiser can be purchased through May 2.
