City Clerk Markeeta Outlaw will conclude her 28-year city career in June.
Outlaw informed the Starkville Board of Aldermen Wednesday she will retire effective June 1.
The board will consider approving a revised job description for the city clerk and an advertisement to fill the vacancy at its May 1 meeting.
Outlaw has worked for the city in several capacities since 1985. Her tenure as city clerk began in 2004. Before taking that position, she served as a deputy city clerk from 1992-2004. She started her employment for the city at Starkville Electric Department in 1985.
Outlaw said she is pleased with her 28 years as a city employee but is looking forward to retirement.
“It’s time to go do other things,” Outlaw said. “Being the city clerk is a challenging yet rewarding position. I feel like it’s more challenging than rewarding at times, but nonetheless it is a position that grows on you.”
City Chief Administrative Officer Lynn Spruill said Outlaw will be difficult to replace not only because of how well she served in her tenure but also because of the responsibilities involved.
“The board speaks only through its minutes, and Mrs. Outlaw has been keeper and taker of the minutes for almost eight years. Without accurate minutes and that expertise, it becomes very difficult for us to maintain accurate records for what we do, and that’s critical for the history and future of the city,” Spruill said. “The city clerk touches on almost all of the city’s functions, and such is a vital role that Mrs. Outlaw has played and the next person will play.”
Starkville Mayor Parker Wiseman commended the consistency of the city’s performance in its annual audits under Outlaw’s direction.
“The next city clerk will have big shoes to fill,” Wiseman said. “Mrs. Outlaw has served the city of Starkville with distinction, and she will be sorely missed. The city clerk’s office is the main office through which all transactions in city government must pass.”
