Bike Rally opens, Dinner Ride set

Thousands of bikers will begin descending on Sturgis today for the 2010 Sturgis South Motorcycle Rally.
On Friday, Starkville residents wil get a taste of the rumble and roar the bikers will bring to Sturgis when the Rally Friends Dinner Ride rolls through town.
“We encourage local residents to come out to Highway 12 through Starkville on Friday to see and support the Bike Parade through Starkville,” said Donny Hanson, president of the Rally Board
The ride procession will line up in front of Sturgis Town Hall at 3:30 p.m. Friday and will leave Sturgis at 4 p.m. with an escort by the Mississippi Highway Patrol Motorcycle Brigade leading the riders, followed by the rally staff and registered Friends of the Rally.
The ride will proceed west from Sturgis on Highway 12 and move through Starkville on Highway 12 West to
Highway 182, with a stop at 4:30 p.m. at the Village Cycle Center on Highway 182, where the bikers will enjoy a barbecue dinner.
“We’re planning to feed around 750 people,” said Village Cycle Center owner Paula Ivey. “It’s good to see all the people who show up and see where they come from to attend the Rally.”
This will be the 12th year Village Cycle has sponsored a Dinner Ride stop, said Ivey, who encouraged Starkville residents to watch the Dinner Ride processional by lining up on Highway 12.
“We always have a big crowd, and all of Clayton Village supports the bikers coming to see us,” Ivey said. “We see a lot of our old customers who have moved away and come back to the Rally to visit. Plus, we can help stimulate interest in riding motorcycles.”
The ride will depart Village Cycle Center at 5:30 p.m., taking U.S. 82 to Highway 25 South and heading to Louisville.
The ride will stop at the Louisville Coliseum at 6:15 p.m. and depart at 6:45 p.m., heading northwest on Highway 15 to Ackerman and then turning back east on Highway 12 to Sturgis.
The ride will conclude at 7:30 p.m. and will be an 80-mile round trip. Participating bikers should have plenty of fuel and wear helmets, Rally organizers say.
When the Dinner Ride passes through Starkville, all eastbound lanes of Highway 12 will be closed to traffic, with Starkville police officers set at each intersection for traffic control. Residents interested in watching the Dinner Ride processional through Starkville are encouraged to park in public lots on the south side of Highway 12 and safely watch from those areas, officials said.
