South Mississippi newspaper closes citing competition

Emmerich Newspapers, which launched the Laurel Chronicle in 2012, published the newspaper's final edition on Wednesday.

Jones County will still be served by the Laurel Leader-Call, which prints three days a week. Jim Cegielski has owned the Leader-Call since 2012, when the newspaper's former owner closed it, then sold the assets to Cegielski.

Emmerich Newspapers President Wyatt Emmerich says in the Chronicle's final edition that the Leader-Call will now be printed on his company's presses in McComb.

Emmerich says the Chronicle was unable to out-compete the Leader-Call and it's time to "accept the reality of the market." He says Emmerich will benefit from the printing contract, while Cegielski's paper will benefit from less competition.
