Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a Wednesday night shooting that injured one man just outside the city limits.

Multiple unmarked emergency vehicles could be seen at the Sprint Mart on MS Highway 182 across from the Starkville Ford-Lincoln dealership around 8 p.m. Wednesday night and emergency officials confirmed one man was shot.

It is unclear at this time exactly where the shooting occurred, but Investigator Lt. Brett Watson said deputies were canvassing the Blackjack community for witnesses on Wednesday night and are still gathering information about the shooting.

Watson said on Thursday morning that no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, but witnesses identified the suspect as a 5-foot, 7-inch tall black male dressed in all black. He said said after investigators spoke with witnesses, it was said another person was injured in the shooting. But upon further investigation after tracing the alledged victim by their nickname, it was determined that no one else was injured in the shooting.

The victim met emergency officials at the Sprint Mart and was transported to OCH Regional Medical Center shortly thereafter.

OCH Regional Medical Center Director of Emergency Medical Services Michael Hunt told the Starkville Daily News the male victim was treated for two gunshot wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening. The identity of the victim has not been released at this time and it is unclear if any arrests or charges are pending in connection with the shooting.

Hunt also confirmed that there were no other injuries as a result of the incident.

Watson said the victim was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital shortly after the shooting. He then said anyone in the community who has information about the shooting can call the Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Department at (662)-323-2421.
